Coloring hair at home is not as intimidating as people make it out to be. With the latest coloring kits available, coloring hair at home is easy and inexpensive and the best part is that you don't have to loose your sleep over getting an appointment. But, if you're doing it for the first time, it can prove to be a little tricky. Here are a couple of tips to help you get it right, the first time itself.
1. Selecting the right hair color:
Opt for a temporary or semi-permanent hair color as the color wears off within 16 - 28 washes. So, even if you're dissatisfied with your efforts, you won't have to take refuge in scarves and shawls for too long!
It is also important that you choose a hair color that is ammonia-free. Ammonia-free hair colors are safer for your hair and they do not give out a foul smell. I tried L’oreal’s Casting Creme Gloss and the results were truly amazing. The Casting Creme Gloss range offers several shades so it’s easy to find one that will suit your skin tone.

2.Checklist before you begin coloring:
Protect your skin and surroundings so that you don't have to deal with unwanted stains. Put newspapers
on the floor and drape a towel around your neck. Cover your hands with gloves
(which normally come with your hair color) and keep spare rags handy to wipe spills.
Apply a coat of Vaseline along your hairline, ears and neck to wash off excess
dye with ease.
Also, remember to test the hair color on a few strands of
hair before you use it. This will help you get an idea of the shade you’re
going to get after the color has been washed off.
3. Coloring your hair:
Don’t wash your hair on the day of coloring, but do so 24 or
48 hours in advance as the natural oils protect your scalp and also help absorb
color. Mix the hair color as per directions on the box.
For applying color, part your hair into four main sections
and keep these sections apart by pinning them with salon clips. Now, take
smaller subsections from each section and apply color. Make sure that you make
really small subsections so that the color covers each strand uniformly. Apply color on the roots and work your way outwards. Pin the colored subsections on the top of your head to prevent them from coming in the way.
4.When to wash your hair:
Read the directions on the box for this. Most instructions
tell you to wait for 25 to 45 minutes. If you have a lot of grey hair, wait
till the maximum time limit. Never leave color on overnight as this makes the hair extremely dry. Use cool water to rinse off the color, then gently
rub in the conditioner supplied with the kit. Do not wash your hair for the
next 24, preferably 48 hours as this allows the hair color to penetrate through
your hair shaft
Don't get disappointed if you don't get perfect results the first time. Remember, practice alone can make you perfect. After a couple of tries, you're sure find hair coloring to be a piece of cake!
